Due to our expertise in mechanical patient handling, Qantas approached Haycomp with a challenge: to develop a hoist that would eliminate the difficult and sometimes dangerous task of manually lifting passengers with reduced mobility. Traditional manual handling methods posed significant risks to both passengers and airline staff, leading to the need for a safer and more efficient solution.
In response, Haycomp designed and developed the Eagle hoist—a specialised lifting system that allows for the seamless and dignified transfer of Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRMs) from a wheelchair to their aircraft seat. The Eagle hoist has been a game-changer in accessible air travel, providing a fully supported transfer while reducing strain on staff. The hoist has been widely recognised and appreciated by both airline personnel and passengers, reinforcing Haycomp’s reputation for excellence in patient handling solutions.
Haycomp’s Background and Manufacturing
Haycomp’ s Managing Director and Owner; John McGuinness, founded AIS Group of Companies in 1981. Starting out servicing the Medical and Scientific Industries, and eventually developing into Healthcare & Mobility by acquiring the Haycomp Brand as one of its own.  Haycomp was established in 1994, by a team of professionals with decades of expertise in advanced composites, toolmaking, and manufacturing, has always been dedicated to producing high-quality, innovative lifting solutions tailored to meet the needs of both the healthcare and aviation industries.
Whilst Haycomp’ s Head Office and Sales base is in the original AIS office space in Bayswater Victoria; the Manufacturing remains in South Australia. Initially, Haycomp was based at the University of Adelaide Research Park, an environment that fostered creativity and technical collaboration. This location enabled us to refine our engineering capabilities while maintaining close ties with industry experts and research institutions. Eventually, relocating the manufacturing to the new premises just 400 meters away, allowing us to expand our operations while remaining within the thriving Adelaide manufacturing hub.
The Adelaide region is home to strong automotive, defence, and manufacturing industries, supporting a network of highly skilled subcontractors and suppliers. Haycomp collaborates with some of these specialised manufacturers for various production processes. This strategic approach allows us to concentrate on what we do best—product design, assembly, quality control, and customer service. By leveraging local expertise and maintaining stringent quality standards, we ensure that our hoists continue to meet the highest safety and performance expectations.
